Thailand travel tips

What not to do in Thailand
  • Never criticise or joke about the King or the royal family; it is a serious crime. Don't step on money: banknotes show the King.
  • Cover shoulders and knees in temples, take off your shoes, and don't climb on or pose disrespectfully with Buddha statues.
  • Swimwear is for the beach only. Don't touch people's heads.
  • Drugs are strictly illegal, and vaping (e-cigarettes) is banned.
  • Wear a helmet and carry a licence and ID when you ride a scooter.
  • When the national anthem plays in public (08:00 and 18:00), stand still.
When is the best season for island trips?

The calmest sea on the Andaman coast is usually from November to April. From May to October the sea is rougher, and the Similan and Surin national parks close for part of this period.

Money and payments

Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB). Cash in baht is accepted everywhere; Visa and Mastercard work in most hotels, shops and restaurants in tourist areas. Exchange money at official counters, for example at the airport.

Which languages are spoken?

The official language is Thai. English is widely spoken in Phuket. Two useful words: "sawasdee" (hello) and "khop khun" (thank you).

Thai dishes to try

Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, Som Tam (papaya salad), Massaman curry and mango sticky rice. Food can be very spicy: say "mai phet" for no chili.

Do I need a visa?

Rules depend on your passport and change over time. Check the official Thai e-Visa website before you travel.
